Caring for Emotional Balance: The Role of Essential Oils
| 2 minute(s) of reading

Hi, readers!

How's your emotional balance?

If I had to guess, I'd say not very good. That's because Brazil is among the countries with the highest number of people suffering from symptoms of anxiety, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO). Did you know that?

And there's more... if you, like me, spend your day facing a screen (whether it's a computer, tablet, or cellphone), the chance of your emotional well-being being affected increases even more. According to Unimed Campinas, studies have shown the negative effects of excessive screen time, especially on social media, on brain function.

Social media affects neurotransmitters linked to well-being and can lead to dependence on the brain's reward system, speeding up the production of dopamine, responsible for the feeling of pleasure, in an unsustainable way. In other words, screens give us this hormone release very quickly, causing addiction. Since other activities don't release it as quickly, we increasingly seek this immediate reward through social media.

How to deal with this? An alternative to taking care of emotional balance is to explore the power of essential oils through aromatherapy.

When stimulated by these oils, the sense of smell activates the same region of the brain responsible for processing behavior and emotions, known as the limbic system. This means that aromas can directly influence how we feel, providing a sense of calm, relaxation, or energy, depending on the oil used!

Which oils to use for emotional balance?

Lavender: known for its relaxing and calming properties, ideal for reducing stress and promoting a sense of tranquility.

Brazilian mint: alleviates fatigue and stimulates the senses, boosting concentration and memory.

Orange and Sicilian lemon: these citrus oils have properties that relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression, significantly reducing levels of tension and stress.

Thyme: has a revitalizing effect, widely used in cases of physical and mental exhaustion as it revives bodily energy.

How to use?

If the oil is diluted, it can be applied directly to the skin, in the desired area (for this, you have to do a test first! Apply three to five drops on the forearm, wait 24 hours). For better absorption, it is recommended to apply directly to the wrists, neck, chest, and behind the ears, and gently massage.

If the oil is 100% concentrated, it should not be applied directly to the skin, but diluted in vegetable oil or in neutral cream or in diffusers (the amount should be specified on the product).

Can everyone use them?

No. Essential oils are not recommended for pregnant women or babies, and it is recommended that everyone consult a doctor when using them!

It is important to emphasize the importance of acquiring quality essential oils, thus ensuring their effectiveness and safety, and to pay attention to the product guidelines regarding the mode of use.
